Thought for the month - March 2013

Fast on your feet.....

Business owners can be quick to criticise some of the young, and not so young people they employ, questioning their work ethic and values. They say "you just can't get the staff."

We know a twenty one year old who started work with a job in the sales office four months ago with a local firm. A week ago she was told that she is now redundant because nineteen jobs are going to be made into eleven. The nineteen staff were told that they could apply for one or more of the remaining posts, providing they get their application, CV and personal statement in by the following Wednesday evening.

With the documents in place, she had her interview with two directors this Friday morning and she will find out how successful she has been next Friday morning.

We had advised this person to watch out for the 'fast ball' question. It came right at the end of the meeting when one of the directors looked her square in the eye and said "Why you?" So she apparently looked him square in the eye and replied, "I have been told that if you want a decent job you have to have the skill, (the how to do) the knowledge, (the what to do) and the attitude." (the wanting to do) And then she went on to explain how she applies this model to her job at the company.

We tell people to give as good as they get in interviews; ultimately both parties are looking for a relationship based upon mutual trust and respect.....
