January 2018 - Under your nose

A New Year is an exciting time for many businesses: new hopes, new ideas, new energy.

The best businesses are always on the lookout for new talent and it is amazing where you can actually find it. One of the commonest places to find new talent is people that are already on the payroll, often having been employed in their existing role for many years!

The fact is that, for all sorts of reasons, sometimes staff are simply doing the wrong job; they have the skills, the knowledge and the passion for something that they are not being paid to do.

I remember a chap that drove a dumper truck in a quarry near Kington. As part of a Staff Survey I asked him what he enjoyed most about his job. He laughed and said that he "enjoyed fixing the computer on the weighbridge." I replied, "But that isn't your job." And he said that he was frequently asked to do this task because "no one else" knew how to do it.

Anyway, management at the quarry had no idea that computers were Dave's hobby. Within two weeks he had a new job, servicing the weighbridge computers in eleven other depots around the country. He got a company car with that role too.

So if you are the boss, how do you find the talent and the passion that is right under your nose? It's easy - you get closer than ever before to your people. You sit in on meetings, you do regular appraisals, you listen to people's ideas and their initiatives, you take an interest in your staff, you look for those that do what they say they will do, when they say that they will do it.

Your staff are your 'squad' and it's your job to put the best team out with people in the team playing in the right position week in and week out. That's what champions do!
