Thought for the month - April 2013

Great Story

Excellence, in a variety of ways, is all around us when we look for it.

Graeme told the group how his engineering business was tendering for a big contract. It was with a large local international company who normally use one of the national suppliers for their requirements. Typical of the man he went on to say that "we were lucky enough" to be invited to quote.

He won the order and members of the Hereford Director's Forum wanted to know how he did it in the face of such competition. He explained that other suppliers had put a team of people on the job in order to produce a slick presentation including their track record, their credentials, their transfer mechanisms, in other words, how they would do the job, and so on.

Graeme on the other hand just concentrated on the results he expected his colleagues to be able to deliver. Secondly the big players had very fixed ideas about what they could do and what they could not, whereas the local player emphasised flexibility, responsiveness and listened very carefully.

Graeme went on to say that he feels more large organisations are becoming ever keener to source locally where possible. Super learning and super potential opportunities for all of us.......

Talking of excellence, Jesse Norman, our local MP, is the Parliamentarian of the Year. Irrespective of politics that takes some doing, so let's listen to his views on business and enterprise.
